Bathrooms are often too cramped for comfort and offer little relief the stress of the day. This Sanindusa bathroom design offers a zen-like retreat with its eye-catching, but calming apple green and porcelain white combinations. For once, the toilet isn’t placed against a wall, but instead, against a countertop unit. The unit hides the plumbing beautifully while offering extra counter space that is always appreciated in a bathroom. The Sanindusa Série T taps blend in easily in their crisp chrome finish and clean lines, and adding to the contemporary touch. The design is inherently simple; however it is paired with a marvelous background - a trick of light and glass – to create a surreal outdoor experience.

Plays on volume & proportion require the body to traverse a series of delayed thresholds creating 2 or 3 mains points of discovery as height and volume are compressed and expanded within this single fronted victorian terrace. These spatial rhythms are similarly overlayed & integrated with the change in language from period facade through to the new intervention at the rear.
The small site required every last mm to be utilised, hence all the internal walls of the previous partially detached rear are pushed to the site boundaries effectively fortifying the internal and external living areas & maximising the sites potential useable area. A series of architectural objects are dropped onto the virtually clean slate of the rear open space. This series of specifically positioned yet seemingly random geometric forms dangle precariously over the drop in floor level (accommodating the fall of the site) and house different functional zones that delineate spaces within the main volume.

Modern Spiral Stairs

Spiral stairs have always held an essence of mystery and romance. With their new Genius collection, Albini & Fontanot have created a contemporary modern style for the classic spiral stairs. A light and airy design, the beech treads feature prominently while the solid wood handrail swirls like fine garnish. Solid beech has a rich golden colour, light and warm. The steel supports with their shining smooth surface, contrast fabulously with the wood grain. The Albini & Fontanot stairs mirror the repetition in the treads in the five steel cables that twist around the helical stairs. Besides the modern diaphanous design, Spiral stair can be fantastically practical. Ideal for converted buildings or restricted spaces, spiral stairs take up half the space of traditional flights. This frees up more room for living in, while also adding sparkle and mystery. Albini & Fontanot have created a wonderful addition for modern home design.

Interior Decoration

Interior DecorationInterior Decoration

Interior decoration or decor is the art of decorating a room so that it is attractive, easy to use, and functions well with the existing architecture. The goal of interior decoration is to provide a certain "feel" for the room; it encompasses applying wallpaper, wall decals, painting walls and other surfaces, choosing furniture and fittings, such as light fixtures, floorplans and providing other decorations for the area such as paintings, sculptures and carpets. In some cases, interior decorating is performed professionally by certified interior decorators (C.I.D.).
Although the terms interior decorating and interior design are sometimes used interchangeably, each discipline exhibits a distinct difference in its scope. Interior decorating is generally focused on the selection and presentation of interior items within a space, such as furniture, accessories, finishes and room layout. Interior design, on the other hand, involves manipulating the architectural integrity of the interior space.

It’s Howl-o-ween!

halloween decoration.jpgHalloween Decoration

It’s Halloween time, my second, really, since leaving my ex – and I’m enjoying it. The first year, I was still in shock, still sort of dazed. I managed to buy candy just in case there were Trick or Treaters (there was one) and other then that, I did no decorating, nothing.

The kids go to the big Halloween carnival at the church… Sorry, it’s not a Halloween carnival, it’s City Hope or something like that, and it’s a Halloween Alternative. Anyway – it’s cool and it’s great. There are games, activities, candy, food and other fun stuff, and it’s free to the community. They also usually do the church’s big To Hell and Back sermon thingy… OK, great. Have fun, not my scene, thanks.

Meanwhile, I always loved Halloween. It’s that time of year when you get to poke fun at your fears. Maybe it’s my love of costuming, makeup and effects coming out – but I’ve always loved the haunted houses, creepy décor and eerie or gross makeup. But I spent 13 years unable to do any of that, and instead had to use “harvest theme” décor.

There were no witches, or vampires, or goblins, or things that go bump in the night in my children’s Halloween costume repertoire, nor were any of those things in my holiday décor. Nope, those things were considered “demonic”. Instead it was pumpkins, and scarecrows, and corn and cornucopia and it looked like an early Thanksgiving or something like that. I’m not into farm décor, thanks, but there I was slinging straw and gilding gourds. All I really wanted was to break out the black lights, spin some spider webs and get ghoulish.

So, this year, I decided to live a little.

My front door and patio area are adorned with wisps of cobweb. The stuff stretches all over the front door and meanders over the arch to trail along the plants and patio gate. On my front door is a sign, “The Witch Is In” – just because I thought it was cute, and propped right next to the door is an old-fashioned looking witch’s broom.

So far, that’s all I’ve done. I’ll likely do more. I’m torn between keeping it tame and borderline cutesy, as it is now, and turning it into a real ghoul-fest. I’ll probably go somewhere between, and opt for an old-fashioned, traditional haunted house look. The cutesy witch sign will make way for a cauldron (to be filled with dry ice come Halloween, for that eerie fog effect), the cobwebs will expand, and touches out of Gothic horror novels may appear. My front walk and patio area would make a perfect slice of ancient “dungeon” after all. Nothing to grisly, nothing too ghastly. No, I want the atmosphere that seeps in, not the one that slaps you in the face and becomes laughable.

My kids, meanwhile, those charming little munchkins I thought would be offended by the obvious change in style, instead love it. Both absconded with chunks of my webbing and have since adorned their beds with the gossamer stuff. (MAC even had some help from his old mom…) Their Dad would be outraged. No, strike that. He’d be quietly “disappointed” and would instead lecture, no – preach, at them regarding the deeper meaning and symbolism of using that spider web.

But not me! Nope! I’m free to enjoy being a little silly, free to grab on to that little piece of childhood that we can all still enjoy when it comes to silly holidays like Halloween. Yes, I know all about what the day is, where it came from and all that stuff. But to American children, it’s a day of silliness, or perhaps ghoulishness, where you can become the boogieman and laugh at that which otherwise frightens you. And the big bonus, you get candy for you efforts! As an adult, perhaps it’s a day to feel just a little bit like a kid again.

Yep, that’s it. I’m getting more decorations! And I’m stocking up on candy! Maybe we’ll get a few more Trick or Treaters this year, there are more kids in the complex now…

5 Basic Ideas of Modern Home Decorating

Modern Home Decorating
Simplicity
. If you were looking for a word that described what modern home decor was then that would be; it is simplicity. Of course, simple doesn’t mean boring and modern decor with its clean lines, neutral color palette and geometric shapes is anything but boring. Instead, modern home decor can be warm, inviting and completely stylish in just about any home. But how do you achieve modern home decor? Obviously, it isn’t as simple as walking into a store and choosing items that have clean lines. There takes a bit more to that and there are several basic ideas that should be incorporated into a modern decor.

The first idea is to keep it simple. Remember that word that best describes modern design and make sure that you incorporate it into your space. There is no need for the room to simply be four walls and a chair for sitting, we aren’t going to that extreme, but you will want to keep things as uncluttered as it possible. Studies have shown that clutter can lead to stress in your life so keeping your decor simple will help alleviate some of the stresses that you feel.

The second idea of modern home decor is function. Not only should your rooms be simple with those clean lines and minimal artwork and accessories, but it should also be functional. This varies greatly from room to room but when you go into a room, it should be easy to access and use various items in it. So, for instance, a kitchen that is designed with modern decor in mind should have ample workroom and everything should be easy to access.

Technology is the third idea for a modern decor in your home. It is actually a lot more than simply stating “technology” and any electronics that are in your home should work with the space. It is often recommended that all electronics be streamlined, so flat panel televisions, built in DVD players, small flat screen televisions in the kitchen, and computers tied in to a room rather than being a lump in it, are important to keep those lines clean.

Open spaces. If you are going with a modern decor, then you will want to utilize our fourth idea by having lots of open space in your home. This may not be possible in some homes that offer closed rooms instead of an open concept but you can create the appearance of open spaces by using color, fabrics and furniture. You can also keep windows coverings that are light in color and airy in feel to create an open feel in to the room, even if it isn’t.

The last idea for creating a modern decor in your home is to add a little bit of character to the space. It can be amazing how one splash of color on an otherwise neutral palette can create such an alarming effect to the room. Don’t hesitate to explore your options with color and make the space one that you will enjoy sharing with every.

Creating a modern decor doesn’t have to be difficult and there is a lot of room to play around with your spaces. All you really need to remember are these five simple rules and before you know it, you will have a modern decor that shines.

This gorgeous luxury skyhouse (at 512/357 Glenmore Road, Paddington, was designed for indoor outdoor modern entertaining with total on 390 sqm approx. I love this sky house from 3 reasons. Reason number 1: the color and the sense of humor that seems to be in the space. Reason number 2: the sort of sloppy/cozy brown couch and warm hardwoods running throughout. And reason number 3, that view must be awesome. The upper level has a special ambiance to the huge formal and informal open living and dining zones, a fabulous separate living room/TV studio, and an entertains kitchen. Sapphire Gallery is an addition to an existing 1960’s modern house that seeks to wrap a growing art collection in a sculptural object of its own. The new structure is grafted onto the existing circulation/ gallery spine of the main house, extending it up to a second story for light and views. Lightweight, factory built trusses comprise the building structure, designed to be assembled on site in a day. Braced frames in each direction transfer shear and gravity loads to grade, and the resultant second story cantilevers allow for a minimal footprint and landscaping to connect the various courts and gardens on the property.

Influence of Islam and the Mughal Architecture

Taj MahalTaj Mahal

With the advent of Islam, the erstwhile Indian architecture was slightly adapted to allow the traditions of the new religion, but it remained strongly Indian at its heart and character. Arches and domes began to be used and the mosque or masjid too began to form part of the landscape, adding to a new experience in form and space. The sahn or the open courtyard for congregational worship with the enclosing cloisters or liwans and the sanctuary at the Western end offered a different architectural vocabulary. The fundamental difference lay in the fact that Islam prohibited idol worship and therefore a concentrated point of focus such as the garba-griha was unnecessary. However, the mihrab on the Western wall of the sanctuary articulating the Qibla or the direction towards Mecca offered a notional focus. As idolatory was prohibited, the main means of adornment was surface decoration through the use of geometry, arabesque and calligraphy. Later, mosques began to be built with original material. The Jami masjid at Delhi is a representative example of an Indian mosque. Islamic architecture was also represented by distinct regional styles that drew a lot of inspiration from the local context.

The most famous Islamic buildings in India emerged during the Mughal period. Mughal architecture built on the traditional Hindu architecture with influences from the Persian world. Over time, Hindu and Islamic architecture produced a synthesis that is exemplified in the glorious production of Akbar- the city of Fatehpur Sikri, considered by many to be superior to the Taj Mahal (often seen as representing India) in terms of what it has to teach to civilisation- syncretism, tolerance and the best of different worlds, and the Taj itself, renowned for its beauty in white marble, its intricate engravings, its minarets and its setting.

The most popular Islamic building type in India is the tomb or the mausoleum which evolved from the basic cube and hemisphere vocabulary of the early phase into a more elaborate form during the Mughal period where multiple chambers are present and tombs were set in a garden known as the char-bagh. The tomb chamber houses the cenotaph below which is the grave. Well known examples are the Gol Gumbaz, Bijapur and the Taj Mahal, Agra.

Indian architecture is that vast tapestry of production of the Indian Subcontinent that encompasses a multitude of expressions over space and time, transformed by the forces of history considered unique to the sub-continent, sometimes destroying, but most of the time absorbing. The result is an evolving range of architectural production that none the less retains a certain amount of continuity across history.

It was famous architect Frank Gehry who once said, "Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness". We here at Furniture Fashion also subscribe to this point of view and want to highlight some of the most stunning architectural accomplishments that encapsulate ethos like ingenuity, vitality and subliminal design sensibilities.

When it comes to modern architectural marvels, chances are you will find more than one in the city of Dubai. Modern Living Room and Bedroom Furniture with Absolutely Unique Look

Opt for a soothing color scheme and avoid colors and busy patterns on walls. They will not be to everyone’s taste and can make a room seem small and cluttered. Coming up with good living room designs should not be based primarily on the aesthetic value. Functions should come off as the top priority. You would not want your imported vases to be useless if you will display them in your living room and block the necessary space. Keep in mind that when creating living room design, it is best to always consider the space provided.

Interior Design: Tips on Creating a Home Nursery

Interior Design
When you find out that you are going to become a parent, many things run through your mind. After the initial shock, joy, uncertainty, and acceptance, there is only one thing to do: prepare for baby! This can be a great deal of fun, and one way to include your husband and get him excited too. I find it more fun to design a nursery once the sex of the baby is known, but for those of you who want the sex to be a surprise, there are still tons of options to make your baby's space unique. Baby products are always in demand, and have come a long way in terms of having options for style. Traditional, transitional, and contemporary furnishings and accessories are all available at a variety of price ranges.

We'll begin designing your dream nursery with determining a color scheme for your little one's new space. For girls the tradition has always been soft pink, but I find more new parents wanting other options. Look at brighter pinks or soft purples/ lavenders. Powder blue is no longer your only option for boys either. Orange or green hues can also be used to spice up your son's space. If you want to be really inventive or brave, use combinations of the above colors to set your nursery apart from the rest. One of my favorite combinations is a soft pink with orange accents for happy baby girls, or blue and soft green for a bouncing baby boy. For those trying to prep nursery's for a baby whose sex is not known, yellow is very common, but you could still use an orange or green theme and add the blue, pink, or purples in later. My personal favorite option for this situation is to remain very neutral. Bright or soft whites, tans, and browns can be easily accented to reflect the sex of your little one once you bring them home. This can also give mom something to do during the resting period after the birth.

On a normal basis, I discourage matching furnishings, but for nurseries it seems very appropriate. It gives a crisper, cleaner look, which most new moms find to be very appealing in the "nesting" period. If a whole suite of furnishings is purchased you should have a crib, changing table, and chest of drawers or armoire. White painted, natural or stained woods are my general recommendation. I don't believe in purchasing new furnishings for every child, but instead changing the surroundings and accessories to reflect the child's individuality, therefore I would consider it bad practice to purchase a pink, blue, or gender specific crib. The only exception would be for my clients who have more than enough money to burn and are less concerned with cost than showing off their new bundle of joy's space.

For mom's comfort I like to specify either nursing chairs, or for those who bottle-feed, a comfy rocker/glider (some nursing mothers like to have these chairs as well). Dads are fond of the gliders too, and I will get requests to accommodate more than one in a room so he can share the experiences with his spouse.

Baby items have become big business, and accessories and bedding can be found everywhere. If you're looking for value, you are no longer given two or three options, there are thousands. Quality items are also abundant, but becoming more boutique store items, as cheaper alternatives have started to affect their niche markets. Baby bedding and curtains can be purchased to match, but in this regard, I still like to switch it up and add a designer's touch by using coordinating (not matching!) fabrics. Accessories for babies' rooms can go from art to decals on walls, knickknacks or vases, toys, and mobiles.

As far as making feedings and other things more convenient, I like to include a hidden bottle prep area in the closet, which generally isn't used until the child is older (unless for storing extra items baby is to young for). A small freestanding refrigerator for extra milk or nursery water can be easily hidden in most closets and the bottle warmer and clean bottles stored on racks can be neatly placed on top of the refrigerator for easy accessibility.
